Your homework for today is to read up on the issues befalling the local VFX industry: Occupy Visual Effects [Badass Digest].
Pictured above is a production shot from Life Of Pi (from Tumblr Before VFX), this week’s Best Visual Effects Oscar-winner. The effects house behind many of the film’s glorious vistas, Rhythm and Hues, just declared bankruptcy. VFX outsourcing is becoming a huge issue.
It’s easy as a long-time union member to agree with the calls to unionize (we arced up back home when subediting and copy was outsourced to agencies who could provide content far more cheaply than we could), but I know it’s a different market here and obviously VFX is not my area. At the very least I hope film fans become aware of these issues and vocally support the artists whose livelihoods are at stake.
